Mariah the Scientist’s crowd interactions energize students at Homecoming Concert
DJ Smillz, the university’s in-house DJ, opened for Mariah. He was able to get the crowd jumping up and down with his set that he said he created when he was heartbroken.
After DJ Smillz’s set finished, Mariah made her way to the stage, where she interacted with fans. As she sang, she accepted a fan letter and sweatshirt. Later on, she made her way to the pit to interact with fans during her song “Thanks 4 Nothing.”

DJ Smillz came out an hour later and the floor completely blew up with the crowd jumping up and down. From the get-go, he did not let the energy slow down once, occasionally dropping the vocals out of certain tracks so the audience could sing (or scream) the words and fill the room.

Kent DJ opens for Quavo
Kent State’s Undergraduate Student Government originally invited DJ Smillz to perform at this year’s FlashFest alongside R&B and hip-hop artist Blackbear and girl group The Aces. However, after a member of Blackbear’s team tested positive for Covid-19, Quavo, a member of the hip-hop group Migos, became the new FlashFest headliner.

Kyle “DJ Smillz” does more than the average DJ… he brings KSU students together one event at a time. From DJing events like Kupita/Tranciones and KSU sporting events, to Blastoff and event previously hosting a Black Squirrel radio show - all while being a Junior, Kent State Student himself., majoring in communication studies.
